Oregon’s Sewers are Poisoning Vancouver – January 2004
Sewer system managers in Salem say it happens six or seven times every winter — their sewer systems are overwhelmed by heavy rains, and raw sewage has to be diverted directly into the Willamette River. So far this year, not counting this emergency diversion, 72 million gallons of raw sewage have been dumped directly into the Willamette. The most recent occurrence was over two days, January 28 & 29, 2004. Local news stations broadcasted that people should avoid direct contact with the river water since it is full of harmful bacteria (that can cause serious illness). [Read More...]

EPA Plans to Allow Untreated Sewage in Waterways – January 6, 2004

The public has until Jan. 9 to comment on a Bush Administration plan to routinely allow sewage that’s been only partially treated to be released into public waterways during storms.
The proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency would exempt sewage treatment plants during heavy rains and snowmelts from having to put sewage through the standard biological treatment process to remove pathogenic organisms and other pollutants. [Read More...]

In a Columbian article (January 11, 2004, ‘Rosemere faces off with City Monday’), it says of Victor Erlich (Vancouver City Engineer), “Erlich said Rosemere’s reasoning in applying for the grant based on septic failure ‘is a mystery to us.’ We don’t find any evidence to support the claim that there are environmental health problems stemming from failing septic systems in the neighborhood.” If the City hasn’t found any problems, its because they haven’t been looking! This document was prepared by the Rosemere Neighborhood Association (RNA), which is staffed entirely by volunteers who reside in the Rosemere Neighborhood. Part of the RNA’s mission, which is in keeping with the filing of this complaint, is to: “Encourage participation of all residents and to prohibit discrimination based on the following: race, religion, color, gender, national origin, marital status, familial status, income level, age, sexual orientation, disability, political ideology, ethnicity, gender identification, literacy, and the ability to speak English;” and to “Promote and encourage environmental awareness and preservation in Rosemere.”
This document is arranged in two parts: I) A General Overview of the Complaint in Relation to 17 Affected Neighborhoods in West Vancouver; II) The Complaint as it Relates Specifically to the Rosemere Neighborhood.

RNA UNCOVERS MISSING TEST RESULTS FOR CONTAMINATION OF BURNT BRIDGE CREEK DUE TO FAILING SEPTIC SYSTEMS – 2003
The Rosemere Neighborhood Association, through a Freedom of Information Act request, has obtained a copy of a test called “Burnt Bridge Creek Microbial Source Tracking; Identification of Sources of Microbial Pollution in Burnt Bridge Creek Watershed,” dated October 1999. The RNA obtained a copy of this report through the Freedom of Information Act.
