The RNA sponsored a presentation by Friends of Trees, a non-profit tree planting organization on Tuesday, November 18, 2003. This presentation was in collaboration with the Vancouver Neighborwoods Stewards and the Vancouver Urban Forestry Division. There was a very high turnout for this event, and many people were very interested in the subject of planting trees throughout the neighborhood. Special thanks to Chad Honl of Friends of Trees, and Charles Ray, one of Vancouver’s Urban Foresters, for sharing information on a wide variety of trees available for this wonderful tree-planting opportunity.
Trees will be available for residents to purchase at substantially reduced prices, well below wholesale, from about $20-$50 per tree depending on the variety. Discount prices are available to Rosemere residents due, in part, to a grant submitted on behalf of the neighborhood.
Mr. Honl congratulated Rosemere’s program for being very well organized with exceptionally high participation from Rosemere residents. Special thanks to the many volunteers who handed out flyers throughout the neighborhood to advertise the tree planting event that will take place on March 6, 2004. This program was so well received that Friends of Trees has extended the deadline for ordering trees from November 17 to December 24 of 2003. If you haven’t ordered a tree, but would like to, you may still fill out the order form here. Just fill out and submit the order form, and your tree order will be added to the list.
For those who place orders for trees, the Urban Forester will visit your home and locate good planting spots, and will also perform a safety check to make sure there are no underground utilities in the way. The Urban Forester will also offer you a list of trees that will be appropriate for your planting location. You may choose whichever tree you prefer from the Urban Forester’s approved list. You may visit the Friends of Trees website to review photos of the many varieties of available trees at www.friendsoftrees.org.
Friends of Trees will also have a variety of fruit trees available, free of charge, on April 3, 2004. You must go the Friends of Trees nursery in person to get your free fruit trees. Also, Friends of Trees has live potted Christmas Trees available for $40 each. Please contact Friends of Trees directly for more information on fruit trees and Christmas Trees.
